Can’t Help Falling In Love

October 21, 2022

Fall Guys, the adorable and funny battle royale game where 60 players try and survive a series of ridiculous mini games.

It is fair to say that this game took the world by storm during the infamous lockdown of 2020. Although it felt like everybody played this game for an eternity, in reality I believe the hype only lasted for about 2 weeks before everybody gave up.

Alas, in the year 2022 it seems that there has been a resurgence in the life of Fall Guys. The game had a niche fanbase who still played the game but now it is as if everybody has fallen  back in love with it.

But how has this happened and is this a method that other games that have fallen off can apply. After scouring the internet I believe that I have found 2 reasons for the revival of this sunken game.

The first reason that led to the revival of Fall Guys was Epic Games acquiring Tonic Games Group. Epic games who own many popular games such as Fortnite bought Tonic Games who own Fall Guys. Epic Games made changes to Fall Guys which I believe directly resulted in the rebirth of the game.

When Fall Guy first came out there were two barriers to entry. The price and the exclusivity to PC and Playstation users. Once Epic Games acquired Tonic Games they made Fall Guys free and then made the game cross platform. This of course opened the game to millions of more users who would’ve missed out on all the fun the first time.

The second reason is meme culture. As you may already know, there is no better marketing tool than memes, and although many have tried to fabricate their own, one great thing about a meme trend is that it always happens organically. For example, Binley Mega Chippy, a seemingly ordinary chip shop, randomly went viral on TikTok which led to the shop experiencing "mile long queues including some who had travelled from France, America and Australia".

The Rise of Gru had a similar experience, where what was labelled as a #Gentleminions had thousands of young teenagers dressing up in suits and dancing together while the movie credits played. As a result (maybe not a direct result) the film made over $202 million in 3 days which made it the highest opening for a kids and family movie during the pandemic era.

Fall Guys in its nature is perfect meme material, just how ridiculous the game is and the funny situations that occur, many people have live streamed themselves playing on TikTok along with many videos of funny situations occurring. In addition to this many funny clips such as a Family Guy scene will play on the top half of the screen while at the bottom half someone will be playing Fall Guys. Even though I am 100% sure this is simply a method to keep the viewers attention, I have no doubt that it has attracted players back to Fall Guys.

After all these changes, revival becomes a lot easier. In what is an extremely oversaturated market, many new games have a problem of establishing themselves, luckily for Fall Guys they have already established themselves as an easy to learn game you can play with your friends. May Fall Guys never fall from grace again.
